The Gulf of Sirte

The city of Sirte (which gives its name to the gulf) was the birthplace of Muammar Gaddafi; it's also where he was brutally murdered in 2011. It was established in the early 20th century by the Italians, on the site of a 19th–century fortress built by the Ottomans, and grew into a city after World War II.
